THIS PUBLISHER’S EDITION is one of 200 specially bound, hand numbered, and personally autographed copies of Formula Atlantic: Tales From The Champions & Top Competitors, 1969–2009. Along with author Gordon Kirby, it is signed by six key participants in this Formula Atlantic story:
BOBBY RAHAL: Bobby raced Atlantic cars for four formative years, 1975–’78, and went on to win the 1986 Indianapolis 500 and 1986 and ’87 Indy car championships, adding a third title in 1991. Bobby retired at the end of 1998 and today runs Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, a three-car IndyCar team and two-car factory BMW IMSA sports car team.
KEKE ROSBERG: Keke raced Atlantic cars in 1977 and ’78, fighting for the championships both years. He went on to win the 1982 Formula 1 World Championship with the Williams team. He raced F1 cars through 1986 before racing Le Mans sports cars with success from 1990–1996.
MICHAEL ANDRETTI: Michael won the 1983 Atlantic championship in his only year in the formula. He went on to win the 1989 Indy car championship and retired in 2003 with 41 wins and 32 poles. Michael owned and ran the Andretti Autosport Indy car team from 2003–2024.
JACQUES VILLENEUVE: Jacques won Formula Atlantic championships in 1980 and ’81 driving Marches for Doug Shierson’s multi-car team. He won eight races over those two seasons before winning the Can-Am championship in 1983. He raced Indy cars from 1984-’86, scoring a win at Elkhart Lake in ’85. Jacques started and finished his career on the snow and won the Snowmobile World Championship three times before retiring from the sport.
SCOTT GOODYEAR: Scott won the Atlantic championship in 1986 and went on to finish a close second in the ‘92 and ’97 Indy 500s. Scott raced Indy cars from 1987–2001, winning five races. He also raced with distinction at Le Mans and in European GT cars.
TOM GLOY: Tom raced Atlantic cars for six years from 1975–’80 and won the 1980 Atlantic championship. Tom raced Indy cars occasionally and went on to enjoy a great career in Trans-Am, GTO and GTP cars winning the 1984 Trans-Am championship with his own car.
Through most of Formula Atlantic’s forty-year lifespan the formula was a key stepping-stone for American and Canadian drivers to Indy cars or Formula 1. Famously, 1976 and ’77 Formula Atlantic champion Gilles Villeneuve made the jump to F1 with Ferrari where he became one of the sport’s great legends winning six Grands Prix between 1978-’82 before crashing to his death in Belgium in May of 1982. A selection of other Formula Atlantic graduates went on to achieve great success in motor racing. Among these are Keke Rosberg who raced Atlantic cars in 1977 and ’78 and went on to win the Formula 1 World Championship with Williams in 1982. Bobby Rahal raced Atlantic cars for four years in the mid-seventies and went on to become an Indy 500 winner and three-time Indy car champion as well as establishing himself as one of the sport’s top team owners with multi-car operations competing in IndyCar and IMSA. Other top drivers who came up through Formula Atlantic include Indy car champions Danny Sullivan, Michael Andretti, Jacques Villeneuve and Simon Pagenaud.
Bobby Rahal reminisces fondly about his formative years in Formula Atlantic from 1975-’78. “We were like a band of gypsies driving across Canada to the Atlantic races in those days,” Bobby recalls. “We met many people along the way who are still good friends of mine today, guys like James King, Tom Gloy, Tom Klausler and Cliff Hansen. We were all young guys in our early twenties and we travelled together with our cars and little trailers. For me, it was my post-graduate studies after college.
“There were a lot of people in the Atlantic series at that time who had visions of going on to bigger and better things. Guys like Gilles Villeneuve and Keke Rosberg went on to become top-flight Formula 1 drivers and guys like Gloy, Klausler and James King went on to achieve a lot in the sport. It was a fantastically productive formula and Gordon Kirby tells its story with authority and enthusiasm. It’s a great read!”
