Sport car racing’s decade of greatest diversity occurred between 1962 and 1971, perhaps the richest and most exciting period in sports car racing history. This ten year span featured an epic struggle between the two giants of the sports car world - Ferrari and Porsche - accompanied by a host of successful challengers, including Ford, Alfa Romeo, Shelby Cobra, and Chaparral. Manufacturers were also locked in fierce contests to develop cutting edge technology in aerodynamics, engines, and tires. These charismatic cars possessed an unrivaled combination of grace and power.

This meticulously researched and edited photographic essay captures an era of spectacular manufacturer competition. Each manufacturer’s racers were distinctive and memorable: the innovative Chaparrals; the potent Shelby Cobras; Ford’s mighty GT40; the terrifyingly quick Porsche 917; and a devastating array of Ferraris - GTOs, LMs, 512s, and 312 PBs. Each of these models is covered in detail, as are hundreds of other types, both well known and esoteric.

The championship included all of the important endurance racing rounds, such as Le Mans, Sebring, Daytona, the Targa Florio, and Nurburgring, among others. Each race is covered in considerable detail with exquisite photos, extended captions, and additional narratives that are engaging, informative, and entertaining.

Most of the photos in this book have never been published before. They include portraits of the most important and colorful people of the era, such as drivers Mario Andretti, Jo Bonnier, Francois Cevert, Jim Clark, Mark Donohue, Vic Elford, Ignazio Giunti, Dan Gurney, Mike Hailwood, Jacky Ickx, Willy Mairesse, Bruce McLaren, Clay Regazzoni, Jochen Rindt, Pedro Rodriguez, Jo Siffert, Mike Spence, John Surtees, Nino Vaccarella, Gijs van Lennep, and a panoply of other greats. Team leaders, constructors, and manufacturers include Carlo Chiti, Enzo Ferrari, Mauro Forghieri, Jim Hall, Carroll Shelby, Huschke von Hanstein, and John Wyer to name a few.

Janos Wimpffen researched thousands of photographs in archives around the world, and has selected the best that each has to offer. This volume includes the work of famed photographers such as Dave Friedman, Harry Hurst, Pete Lyons, Rainer Schlegelmilch, and many others.
